How Many Animators are there in the World?

Ever wondered how many animators there are in the world? Well so did we! We created this map using “Animator” as a filter on Linkedin for all registered and current animators in various countries (Sorry if we missed yours!) and saw some interesting stats. We then used an interactive map to give you a good idea. Can you guess which country has the most?

Update: Thank you for all our friends who are helping us getting closer to accurate stats, we’re updating countries according to what they call an animator in their language #LanguageBarriers. Please mail us if you can give us correct translations!

*France,Ireland,Chile updated (Thanks for help listed on each country). Japan Animator board contacted for accurate numbers.

  1. THIS IS SOOO INACCURATE!!!! Africa has got animators, and not just in South Africa! I’m an animator in Ghana and there are animators here in not only Ghana but Nigeria and other African Countries as well

  2. Colombia any ?? I am Colombian 😉

  3. this map is everything but accurate. Where is Iran? Are we gonna be political even on this topic?

    • Hi Sikura! We’ve made some updates and added Iran, please come have a look and let us know what you think 🙂

    • Hi Sikura! Thanks for visiting 🙂 We’ll add the data as soon as our developer comes back.We started with a few countries but as people ask about theirs we add it as soon as we get the numbers. If Iran has an Animation group we can contact please let us know and we’ll drop them an email 🙂 Stay awesome!

  4. This map is really bad and not accurate at all. I life in the Netherlands and I can tell you that there is no way that there are more animators in the Netherlands than in country’s such as France or Japan.

  5. peter wassink Jun 23, 2016 at 10:36 pm

    Nice idea but…
The method used to create this map is very unreliable.
In the Netherlands Animator is a job description in the tourist industry, so most of the 945 animators stated in your map for our country are of that kind.
Obviously we don’t have more animators then France, one of the animation capitols of Europe.
Would have been nice…but alas its not the case.

    • Hi Peter, so I’ve updated France (thanks for the heads up) but would like to know if you can give a suggestion for a better title keyword I should search for that’s specific to the animation industry in the Netherlands?

    • Hi Peter!Glad you could drop in to have a look 🙂 Definitely a fun way to create an idea of what the data could be but in a global scale it was a tough one. If you have anyone we can contact for 100% accurate results let us know 🙂 we’re already mailing a few animation groups for different countries. Thanks for the info and Stay awesome!

  6. Those stats are not very accurate… It´s not possible that Japan has only 186 animators and Argentina only 163. Bad data, guys…

    • Hi Toto, can you give us an idea what title to search for? Is there a specific word they use for animator in Argentina which we can use to update the stats? *We’ve contact the Japan board and asked for numbers 😉

    • Hi Toto! Thanks for dropping in 🙂 On a global scale it was the best data source we could find. Were in the process of contacting a few animation groups to see if we can get accurate results for Japan and Argentina (since those are only stats from LinkedIn). Let us know if you have any people we can contact!Stay awesome!

  7. What does someone do to be considered an animator? Is it their full time occupation or do they have published work?

    • Hi James, thanks for visiting! For this exercise the person had to have the word “animator” in their title on LinkedIn . Although not the best way to get 100% accuracy for the numbers it was the best way of coming close. If you have accurate numbers or someone we can contact then please let us know and we’ll update 🙂 Stay awesome!

  8. Dont agree with the numbers? Then send us your countries official animation body’s contact information and we’ll go digging. We’ve found that Asia,China,Japan might not use Linkedin so help us find an accurate source please! Stay Awesome!

  9. Japan, 186?
Just in wikipedia, there are something like 60 animation studios listed : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_anime_companies .
I doubt there is only 3 animators by studios…
    They just doesn’t use linkedin.
Your map is just people who have animator written on their linkdein profiL. It still interesting.

    And there : https://www.jetro.go.jp/en/reports/market/pdf/2005_35_r.pdf
    430 anim production house…

  10. Chile has a lot too!

  11. Include Bangladesh. Though it is veeery small manner , but we have few 2D animated films too for local.

  12. Ireland has a big Animation industry. Many childrens shows from the BBC and Disney, CN etc are produced here. there are at least several hundred if not easily over 1,000 people working as animators or animation artists.

    • Thank you for the heads up Michael, we’ve added you awesome folk to the map and added your name as a thanks as well 😉 Stay awesome!

  13. Nice job guys (even though yourstatistics s surprised me).
am a Nigerian and an animator and there are others too.

  14. Stella Salumaa Jun 27, 2016 at 3:09 pm

Hi, in Estonian it is called “animaator”. Right now it looks like zero, but there are animators.
    Thank you!

  15. interesting facts , just follow always updating , successes!

  16. Hi, I would first like to thank people like you that work hard and share their results at the cost of a lot of people bitching about the inaccuracy. Please keep up the effort.
I am also looking into these figures, but your numbers add up to about 60k-65k animators world-wide… this cannot be possible.
My figures are closer to 1.7 million animators world-wide and I still believe that I am under estimating the market. If I find a reliable source I will share it here.
    Cheers,
    Olivier

    • We appreciate it Oliver and thanks for dropping in! The data is purely from LinkedIn so although I dont believe its 100% accurate it’s just whats being listed on a large business profile platform. Open to any sources 😀

  17. You would think there are more animators in Japan since there are so many anime that come out each year, right?

    • From the discussions it seems that they dont really use LinkedIn as a Job profile, so I guess thats why the number is so small 🙂

  18. Wow, I had no idea that there were so many animators in the world! I would love to be an animator, but I don’t think that I have what it takes. For now I think I will stick to finding new and creative content from other people.
